IPL Laser

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a type of light therapy used to treat wrinkles, sun spots, freckles, broken capillaries (spider veins), acne, rosacea and unwanted body hair. IPL treatments reveal brighter skin that has an even tone and a more youthful appearance. It works by targeting melanin and red blood cells.

Prior to an IPL treatment, it is recommended that you avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for 4 weeks. If you are taking Accutane (an acne medication) you are not eligible for IPL treatments until you have been off it for at least 6 months.

Refrain from using products containing AHA, BHA, Retinol, Vitamin A and other medications that increase your risk of bleeding for 7 days prior to your IPL treatment.

If you are prone to cold sores, please advise your practitioner so that we can ensure you have a prescription for medication to treat this if needed.

It is recommended that a series of treatments be done for best results. This will vary from person to person, but is usually 3-6 treatments depending on your concerns. Treatments should be spaced apart by 4 weeks.

A staff member sets up the laser machine.

The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to complete. You may experience mild discomfort during the treatment – similar to a rubber band being snapped against your skin. We do have numbing cream if needed and our IPL head has a built-in cooling device for your comfort.

IPL is most frequently used for facial rejuvenation, but it can also be used to renew the skin on the neck, upper chest, shoulders, hands, arms and legs. If you choose to have other body areas done, we ask that you attend the clinic in attire that is easily moved to access the treatment area (i.e. – tank top, shorts etc.)

Post treatment, it is imperative to wear a good high quality sunscreen – over 30 SPF. You may experience some redness and in rare cases light bruising. Minor swelling may occur, but usually resolves in 24 hours. Darker areas on the skin may begin to look darker 24 hours after your treatment and then they will start to look like coffee grounds, and gradually slough off. This is a normal process.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal (LHR) is an effective treatment indicated for permanent reduction of unwanted hair on the face and body. It is performed in a series of treatments for best results.

Prior to a LHR treatment, it is recommended that you avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for 4 weeks. If you are taking Accutane (an acne medication) you are not eligible for LHR treatments until you have been off it for at least 6 months.

Refrain from using products containing AHA, BHA, Retinol, Vitamin A and other medications that increase your risk of bleeding for 7 days prior to your LHR treatment.

If you are prone to cold sores, please advise your practitioner so that we can ensure you have a prescription for medication to treat this if needed.

Please shave the area prior to treatment.

You may require 6-8 LHR treatments for full potential results. One treatment will NOT eliminate all hair growth. Treatments should be 4 weeks apart to start, and then the time between treatments may increase as the hair becomes sparser.

LHR is generally very comfortable, but you may experience a sensation like a rubber band is being snapped against your skin. Potential side effects can include minor redness, swelling and temporary “goosebumps” which is follicular edema. You must always use a good quality sunscreen if the treated areas are exposed – 30 SPF or higher.

Avoid extremely hot showers/baths, and vigorous exercise for 48 hours after your LHR treatment. Be patient! Do not wax or pluck the area that was treated. This may disrupt the treatment process which may lead to potential simulation of the hair follicle and you could potentially spark regrowth!

Pixel Laser Resurfacing

The Pixel laser can be used to resurface the skin and smooth down and tighten scars. The Pixel laser uses fractional laser skin resurfacing to rejuvenate the skin.

The Pixel laser is an Erbium YAG laser that works by directing an intense burst of laser energy onto the skin surface in a grid like pattern. The laser creates tiny “pixels” of skin damage or laser holes in the skin. Each of these “pixels” of skin damage are surrounded by normal skin. This allows the skin to heal much faster than if the whole area was treated.

The select damage helps to resurface the skin, promote collagen remodeling, skin tightening, and an improvement in skin texture. The Pixel laser can be used to improve and tighten fine lines and wrinkles, repair sun-damaged skin, reduce age spots and blemishes, and to treat acne scars and hyperpigmentation.

WHERE CAN IT BE USED?

The Pixel can be used on any area of the body. The Pixel has to be used with caution in people with darker skin.

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?

Effects can last years. However, sun exposure, aging, and gravity will all play a role on your skin.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

Treatment is generally well-tolerated and has minimal to no downtime.

During the treatment, your skin will gradual feel warm and sometimes you will feel a light snap on the skin, like an elastic band. Deeper scars and wrinkles that are treated can sometimes be more uncomfortable. We provide a cool air fan that you can direct on warm areas of the skin and that helps your treatment to remain comfortable.

After the treatment, your skin may feel tighter, firmer, or smoother. You will likely have redness like a sunburn. This can last for 2-3 days. We recommend that you do not put your usual cosmetics on your skin for the first 24 hours. After the first day, you may apply make-up (mineral make-up is best) or coverup as required. Aloe gel can be used as well but we recommend testing on a small area to ensure you have no reaction to it (e.g., burning or discomfort). Cool compresses can be used on the skin for the first couple days if you wish.

By day 2 or 3 after treatment, you will have some skin flaking and this usually resolves within 5-7 days. There should be no pain or discomfort after the first day. It is important to moisturize the skin during this week and avoid picking or using harsh scrubs on the skin.

Itching, hives, or significant swelling or burning should not occur and should be reported to the doctor if they do.

We advise that you use sunscreen for the week following treatment. Most people can return to work almost immediately, and in the case of women, any residual redness can easily be covered with makeup.

If you have a history of cold sores, we may prescribe an antiviral medication as a precaution and to help prevent a cold sore from occurring after your treatment.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

Multiple treatments are required to get the best results. We usually suggest a treatment program of 3–5 treatments, normally spaced 4 weeks apart. The number of treatment sessions that you require will vary depending on what we problem.

Pixel Laser Resurfacing Post Care

It is very important to follow post care recommendations closely following a pixel laser resurfacing treatment as it is crucial when it comes to ultimate healing and for superior results and few side effects.

What to expect following a Pixel Laser resurfacing treatment:

-stinging, tingling and sunburn sensation

- redness and sunburnt appearance

-In some cases hyperpigmentation can occur as a side effect, if this occurs we have topical lightening agents we recommend to help inhibit melanin production

-swelling is a very common side effect (elevating your head to a 45 degree angle will help)

-makeup must not be worn to avoid infection and further skin irritation for the first 24-48 until skin re-epithelialization occurs.

-It is normal for the skin to feel rough and dry while the skin heals.

  1. Apply Alastin Skin nectar morning and evening for 7 days to help boost and heal the skin.

  2. SPF daily following Alastin Skin Nectar is very important when undergoing any laser treatment. At face first we Recommend ZO spf primer as it is a physical sunblock.

  3. It is very important to avoid sun exposure during and after the series of treatments as sun exposure increases the risk of side effects

  4. In rare cases burns and blisters can occur. Please contact our clinic if this may occur for further counselling.
